Batting Clean-Up: mobilizing the Dominican Republic’s brightest baseball stars to draw attention and demand change to an already growing Plastic Crisis in the D.R.

The Batting Clean-Up initiative began as a reaction to the plastic waste crisis in the D.R., captured in the now-infamous “Plastic Wave” video that surfaced in July 2018. What started out as beach clean-ups designed to highlight the problem has now evolved into working with local officials and partners to create realistic solutions to how the island approaches waste management overall. Our most recent clean-up was led by eight professional Major League Baseball players including Nelson Cruz and Amed Rosario. The U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, members of the island’s Ministry of Environment, and a number of young MLB hopefuls joined 75 volunteers to clean up two beaches: Montesinos and Fort San Gil. In total, we removed 416 pounds of debris, including nearly 300 pounds of plastic.

Help be a part of the solution for a cleaner Dominican Republic and other island nations by donating or getting involved.

Battling Clean Up

Some of baseball's biggest stars assembled in the Dominican Republic for a beach clean-up. Their goal is to inspire people around the world to rethink the ways we use plastics.
